The Trial of Julian Assange: A Story of Persecution Copertina flessibile – 21 febbraio 2023
Opzioni di acquisto e componenti aggiuntivi
In July 2010, Wikileaks published Cablegate, one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military, including evidence for war crimes and torture. In the aftermath Julian Assange, the founder and spokesman of Wikileaks, found himself at the center of a media storm, accused of hacking and later sexual assault. He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face the accusations of assault and then sent to US. In 2019, Assange was handed over to the British police and, on the same day, the U.S. demanded his extradition. They threatened him with up to 175 years in prison for alleged espionage and computer fraud.
At this point, Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, started his investigation into how the US and UK governments were working together to ensure a conviction. His findings are explosive, revealing that Assange has faced grave and systematic due process violations, judicial bias, collusion and manipulated evidence. He has been the victim of constant surveillance, defamation and threats. Melzer also gathered together consolidated medical evidence that proves that Assange has suffered prolonged psychological torture.
Melzer’s compelling investigation puts the UK and US state into the dock, showing how, through secrecy, impunity and, crucially, public indifference, unchecked power reveals a deeply undemocratic system. Furthermore, the Assange case sets a dangerous precedent: once telling the truth becomes a crime, censorship and tyranny will inevitably follow.
The Trial of Julian Assange is told in three parts: the first explores Nils Melzer’s own story about how he became involved in the case and why Assange’s case falls under his mandate as the Special Rapporteur on Torture. The second section returns to 2010 when Wikileaks released the largest leak in the history of the U.S. military, exposing war crimes and corruption, and Nils makes the case that Swedish authorities manipulated charges against Assange to force his extradition to the US and publicly discredit him. In the third section, the author returns to 2019 and picks up the case as Ecuador kicks Assange out of the embassy and lays out the case as it currently stands, as well as the stakes involved for other potential whistleblowers trying to serve the public interest.

This is a valuable book for knowing the truth about the trial of Julian Assange who may be extradited from UK to USA on Espionage charges, resulting in 175 years in max security prison or his death.
Assange has been persecuted for his truthful reporting of war crimes committed in Iraq, Afghanistan and other crimes that governments do not want known.
Professor Nils Melzer and two other doctors examined Julian Assange in Belmarsh prison in London. They all found evidence, independently, of psychological torture. Julian had been given asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for about 7 years. Now is in his 3rd year in Belmarsh max. security prison awaiting possible extradition to USA.
Assange is a journalist & publisher of Wikileaks. He has been smeared purposely by those in power. There have been plots by high ranking people to murder him. His case is important for all journalists. If he is convicted, it will mean that all publishers who publish inconvenient truths will risk their lives or life in prison.
In my opinion, in recent years it has been more acceptable to talk about war crimes. We all know this is happening in Ukraine and elsewhere. People want to know the truth
I am hoping that the UK does the right thing and does not extradite Julian for his journalistic work.
I am so thankful that Professor Melzer, who was skeptical when he first learned about it, was open to investigate the truth of the case. He saw through the public mobbing and the smearing of Julian's character.
This book is a must read for all who are interested in our freedoms, human rights and the future which our children will inherit.
We raise our children to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!!!
We should not expect to be slung in jail for doing just that!!!!
#FreeJulianAssange.
Do not believe the lies or smears against this very brave man (other journalists are also in jail).
Melzer has assessed Julian Assange’s treatment with the expertise that comes from visiting thousands of prisoners and refugees. He has tried to negotiate for Assange with the British Government using skills and experience acquired in palaces, ministries, command-centres, and with soldiers and rebels in the no-man’s-land between front lines.
In the face of the contempt shown the law and human rights by the UK, the US and Sweden, by the end of this book, this highly placed man has become a whistleblower against the corrupt system himself. He had to write this book because the governments concerned and the mainstream press simply ignored the seriousness of his accusations.
Read what he has to say about the way the Australian Government has conducted itself towards the most famous political prisoner in the world, Australian citizen, Julian Assange.
The insights provided on the Australian government's negligence and callousness may explain why it is hard to get the paper-edition of the book in Australia. You have to order it from overseas. It seems that no stocks are being kept in Australia. When Assange's family tried to give copies to parliament, they were blocked by parliamentary security.
One thing that Melzer (and most Australians) are not aware of is that Australian Parliament has so far blocked all motions to debate Assange's fate, as articles by James Sinnamon show. Her Majesty the Queen is sitting on top of an explosive pile of stinking manure. Nils Melzer's book is like a bomb about to go off. How long can crooked judges and governments hide? How long can the mainstream press pretend that nothing's happening?
