The Gramophone Guide loves this (just sayin') and these really are miraculous performances
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 10 ottobre 2015
The Gramophone Guide has it right here, no controversy. Both the Debussy and the Ravel are superb. I'll become more familiar with the third composition as time goes by. The recording is indeed "crystal-clear" and the disc worthy of the 2001 Best Debut Recording Award Gramophone bestowed upon it. I only mention these things because they might, above and beyond my own commentary, persuade you to buy this wonderful disc. Here's something that will earn me contempt. For many years I was an aficionado of early music, then of Baroque French Opera--hooray for Lully!--following the career of William Christie both on record and in performance. Recently I had an opportunity to hear the Rebel Ensemble for Baroque Music at Corpus Christi Church here in NYC. Great show, but what was notable to my ears was how much more interesting the music got as it emerged from the Baroque and into the early classical period. Suddenly I understood the novelty of classical music, its deviations from what must, at that time, have seemed the tiresome routines of the Baroque, however splendidly achieved. But what I thought about most was the Romantic period I was hearing at home, Haydn transitioning into Mozart, and into Beethoven. What occurred to me after the concert, talking with a friend, is that Beethoven is not so much storm und drang, as a perfectly self-contained, and again novel musical idiom. Have you seen Martha Graham’s Clytemnestra? Something like that. So now into Debussy and Ravel. Everything here seems so fresh. Invention is endless, the unexpected abounds, with again, a fully achieved and internally consistent language, yet an absolute refusal to abdicate the throne of Beauty.
Update: Honestly, the Dutilleux piece is a little wearing. I do wish such interesting compositions--compositions that do not bear repeated listening--would be positioned at the end of programs, rather than dead center between Debussy and Ravel. I do have to skip the Dutilleux now, something of a pain. I know, if you download, you can just delete it or reposition it on your playlist.

Le quatuor Belcea toujours parfait.
Recensito in Francia il 30 agosto 2014

Recensito in Spagna il 7 marzo 2013
