The Necklace: Thirteen Women and the Experiment That Transformed Their Lives (English Edition) Formato Kindle

4,0 4,0 su 5 stelle 520 voti

The true story of thirteen women who took a risk on an expensive diamond necklace and, in the process, changed not only themselves but a community.

Four years ago
, in Ventura, California, Jonell McLain saw a diamond necklace in a local jewelry store display window. The necklace aroused desire first, then a provocative question: Why are personal luxuries so plentiful yet accessible to so few? What if we shared what we desired? Several weeks, dozens of phone calls, and a leap of faith later, Jonell bought the necklace with twelve other women, with the goal of sharing it.

Part charm, part metaphor, part mirror, the necklace weaves in and out of each woman’s life, reflecting her past, defining her present, making promises for her future. Lending sparkle in surprising and unexpected ways, the necklace comes to mean something dramatically different to each of the thirteen women.
With vastly dissimilar histories and lives, the women show us how they transcended their individual personalities and politics to join together in an uncommon journey. What started as a quirky social experiment became something far richer and deeper, as the women transformed a symbol of exclusivity into a symbol of inclusiveness. They discovered that sharing the necklace among themselves was only the beginning; The more they shared with others, the more profound this experience–and experiment–became.

Original, resonant, and beautifully told, this book is an inspiring story about a necklace that became greater than the sum of its links, and about thirteen ordinary women who understood the power of possibility, who touched the lives of a community, and who together created one extraordinary experience.

5,0 su 5 stelle Worth Your Time and Money - An Inspiration and Much More
Recensito in Canada il 25 settembre 2018
This was by far one of the best books I've read in years. This is so much than a story, (in fact it's a collection of true stories), but beyond that, it was about more than a piece of jewelry, it was a set of life lessons and a lesson in inspiration. I have always felt that each of my jewelry pieces tell a story but in this case one piece of jewelry told hundreds of stories and has inspired a continuation of this experiment. It is not an inexpensive book, but even if it were double the price it would be be worth it. I usually read "fluff" to get a time-out from life but when you get away from it all without leaving the real world it is worth it at almost any price. Just read it.

An extraordinary idea of women clubbing together to buy a diamond necklace, and sharing its' use. The effect on each woman, and her story...and then how it develops in an unexpected and wonderful way to benefit their community. An uplifting and life-affirming read.

4,0 su 5 stelle Where do I get one of those necklaces?
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 13 febbraio 2012
The Necklace was a read I wasn't prepared to like. However, I found myself finishing the book in one sitting. The concept was brillant...a bunch of women get together to purchase a diamond necklace none of them could afford alone. But the reason was so different. It wasn't just to grace their necks, but to bring a group of women together for friendship and more.

Yes, the writing is oftentime cloying and sickly sweet. Every one of the women is beautiful, graceful, yada yada...but if you get past that you find pearls of wisdom in the book.

It is an example of what happens when women work together. Gone is being catty, competitive, and nails being bared. Instead, these women find a harmony with the good and bad of each coming forth and either learning or growing through this endeavor.

It's a quick read and if you get past the pollyana type writing you may see things about yourself in here. I did.

Pick it up, us women should strive to create groups like this that feature helping others and sharing as the mantra. Imagine what we could do.
