Furnivall and Stubbs have better things to do when Sir Balfour Campbell's painting goes missing- especially since Sir Balfour admits the picture is essentially worthless. But Reggie Maltby, the cook's son, is also missing and a familiar face turns up somewhere he shouldn't be. Inhalt:
Das ist der dritte Fall für die Polizisten Furnivall und Stubbs. In einem Landanwesen wird ein Bild gestohlen und ein junger Soldat wird vermisst. Und dann kommt noch die Politik dazu...

Bewertung:
Das war bis jetzt das am wenigsten "Krimi" aus der Reihe. Irgendwie war es für mich zu verwirrend und zu viel Politik um genussvoll durchzukommen. Man muss auch die anderen Bücher gelesen zu haben um hier Anspielungen zu verstehen. In bestimmter Weise werden hier alle bisherigen Fälle miteinander verbunden, auch wenn nur durch die beteiligten Polizisten. Es kommen viele Zusammenhänge zu Tage, die Geschichte ist aber nicht unbedingt dadurch leichter zu verstehen.
Andererseits finde ich das Buch wieder toll, weil dort die Situation und die Atmosphäre der Zeit gut dargestellt wird. Diesmal sind es Kriegskritik (Krieg mit den Burren) und die Kunstszene. Diese wird vor allem durch den Ausflug von Furnivall und Stubbs nach Paris dargestellt, wo sie Montmartre besuchen dürfen. Es wird wirklich plastisch gezeigt, vor allem der Besuch von Stubbs bei Moulin Rouge hat Spass gemacht. Auch die Anspielung an Van Gogh (der hier über im Müll landet) ist für den Leser herrlich.
Ich hätte mir aber mehr Krimi und weniger Politik gewünscht, auch wenn ich sagen muss, dass ich die Zusammenhänge jetzt besser verstehe. Daher sind es ca. 3,5 Sterne.

This is the third in this series of old fashioned English police thriller that I've read. Therefore I expected the pace to be slower which suited the writing and setting of the novel. The vocabulary is old fashioned and English, to the extent that the Kindle dictionary doesn’t know some of the words used and Google was employed rather a lot. Once I knew what certain words meant they were a perfect fit for the style and context of the book.

Unfortunately, I did become irritated by the constant use of hyphenated words which were not necessary, a few examples: constructed-horizontal strips; gently-curved support and horse-loving Norman, there were many more littered throughout the book. This may have been a formatting issue, I am not sure.

I was also a bit confused towards the end of the book when Marlowe is introduced as it took several chapters before a connection was established. I also found the ending a bit spurious.

Overall it was still a good read but I enjoyed the first two books in the series more.

Another good light read with nice little bits of fact included, the reading up of which always adds to the interest.
I thought this was not quite as good as the first two books, you can only take the Sherlock Holmes pastiche so far and more down to earth police work was needed. Still good value though.

This was the third of the Caversham series I've read, maybe he's only written three, but this lacked the oomph of the first two books. The detail of life in Victorian times is amazing but the story itself wasn't as spellbinding, in fact I'd even worked out who'd done it quite early on.
