Staying Ahead of the Hammer: How to build and manage your own High Growth business (English Edition) Formato Kindle
WINNER Amsterdam Book Festival Best Business Book 2016
SILVER MEDAL WINNER 2016 Global Ebook Awards Non-Fiction Business
Staying Ahead of the Hammer uses the analogy of a “Hammer Thrower” to help the reader understand how they can successfully manage the relationship between different parts of their business to support growth in sales.
The first key premise of the book explains how long term High Growth can only be achieved if sales and the organisation’s ability to support them are in relative balance. The second premise is that the business’s leaders must look forward and plan the future. This can only be achieved by having the right information available. This enables them to make increasingly accurate predictions about future sales, which in turn will indicate the necessary changes in the organisation needed to maintain growth momentum.
The book identifies the High Growth problem and then looks at Seven key areas of a business and explains how each of these areas can prevent or undermine High Growth and then goes on to explain what can be done to overcome these challenges.
These seven areas are Vision, Culture, Strategy and Planning, Talent Management, Financial Management and Control, Organisational Efficiency and Business Development.
The book is written so that each Chapter is self-contained, allowing readers to look first at those areas which are causing them the most problems. Nonetheless, the book emphasises that all businesses are highly integrated entities and that improvements in one area will inevitably spill over into others.
The book also uses a number of tools and techniques to help the reader address specific problems and these are available to readers as a free download.

The section covering vision, goals and mission statements is very relevant to small businesses and has made me think hard about these topics for my own business. Some excellent material on the importance of culture and how it can get diluted, on planning and reporting against plans. I particularly liked the idea of a one page plan showing all of the business KPIs - too many businesses either have too few or far too many facts and figures to report against.
Training is as Lawrence says is something many businesses are keen to carry out with junior staff, but as a business grows, fail to recognise that training is likely to be even more important for senior staff trying to cope with managing a rapidly growing business.
Working to documented processes is something I talk about when I advise businesses on project management, but is an area that small businesses in particular shy away from - 'we don't have enough time to document what we do'. Lawrence shows that you don't have enough time not to, particularly if you're growing fast, where time spent documenting what you do will pay dividends with each new member of staff you try to integrate into the business. I've seen at first hand that the lack of process in high growth business can have dire consequences, where one business I worked for was subject to fraud because of the lack of a documented process with checks and approvals.
This is an excellent book and a great investment for all small and medium businesses. Lawrence has clearly been there and done it and offers practical advice that works.
The information provided is succinct and helpful to anybody who started a company or experiences a high-growth environment. As Laurence points out, there is not much material of this kind on the market targeted for high growth companies.
The suggestions and concepts described in the book can also help other companies - if modified slightly - as the principles for a successful business don't change just because high growth is happening.
The main reason I did not give it 5 stars is the metaphor used in the book. Though I am familiar with track & field sports I think the notion that the sport of throwing a hammer is sufficient to explain the challenges a high growth companies, or any company applying the principles described in the book, does not resonate with me.
I believe this book would have allowed access to the great information Laurence accumulated in an easier way had it been written as a story. That way characters and situations could relate to the points made from chapter to chapter.
Overall it was a good read and I can say that Laurence knows how high growth companies "tick" and can help them remain on their success-trajectory.
If that is the situation a business owner is experiencing, Laurence' book will help to stay on that path.
