The biographer embarks upon the teenaged Dumas' hunting exploits and describes the boy's thrill at killing hares and other innocent creatures. Dumas himself chronicles the following incident, the bringing down of a boar "...when suddenly the animal, only stunned at first and now revived by the docking of its tail, sprang up and precipitated its conqueror in the dust." Told in his inimitably vivid style, this act of cruelty, just an incident in any hunter's day or dream, will of course repulse feeling persons everywhere.
The first half of this book deals with Dumas' early success as a writer of stage plays before attaining his lasting renown as a novelist. Throughout, there is interesting and meticulous analysis of Dumas' literary works.
This biography is to be recommended to anyone with an interest in Dumas' life as well as in his unforgettable contributions to the world's store of classics..
