Descrizione prodotto

Rinate. Suono spettacolare, mai sentite così...

After viewing the requisite number of YT reviews by people I trust, I purchased it. It’s not cheap but then neither was the PHA-3 when it was new on the market so I really wanted to be sure I was making the right choice. And yea, it’s darn good.
Comparing physical dimensions between the two, the iFi is longer than the PHA-3 but is slightly thinner and narrower. Weight-wise they’re compatible. The metallic blue of the iDSD is very appealing thought I did consider the somewhat inferior iFi model which comes in standard black. On this iFi device I am not overly fond of the two RCA jacks which stick out of the rear of the device but this is mostly due to the fact that I don’t use them. It’s is however not bothersome in any way and they do come with silicone caps.
The AUX-in jack can be a regular 3.5mm or optical with the included adapter. The USB-A male - not female - is recessed which is good. I use a low-cost USB 3.0 type A male-to-female cable between the iDSD Signature and the iPad Pro 2021 with the Apple camera adapter and it works great.
Performance. I only use high-end, mostly balanced, headphones with the iDSD Signature. As it is the 4.4mm Pentaconn headphone output which gets more power than the larger unbalanced output, I only use the balanced output with adapters to accommodate my various headphones. In contrast the PHA-3 requires two 3.5mm jacks for balanced output and for more power to the headphones. When the PHA-3 was first released on the market, the 4.4mm headphone jack wasn’t a thing.
The iDSD Signature has three power modes: IEM, standard and turbo. I don’t use IEM’s but I have noticed that the Sony MDR-Z1R prefers this mode as they are extremely efficient headphones which may explain why the full-sized headphone amplifier Sony chooses to pair with the Z1R’s is so underpowered for most other headphones. Standard mode will easily drive headphones like the Fostex TH900’s (quite efficient) to 300 ohms headphones like Sennheiser HD 650 and HD800/S. Turbo mode is needed when driving inefficient headphones like the HifiMan HE6 or Focal Utopia’s (original or 2022 version). Turbo mode really makes the amplifier work as it can get quite warm when using turbo mode and pumping up the volume. In battery mode, turbo will burn through you listening time quickly but when plugged in the device will just keep on truckin’, It is advisable to purchase the separate iFi power plug/adapter together with the iDSD Signature. While it will add to the price tag, the iFi power plug provides wall socket adapters for use in most countries around the world. It also provides a variety of device connectivity options which for the iDSD Signature is USB-C.
The volume pot control is very smooth, both tactility and for volume attenuation. As the volume attenuates one can hear that the volume hits one ear cup before the other (at least when using the balanced output) but as this is at a level below what would be low-volume listening, it is not a problem. It’s only just discernible. Past that point the volume increases very smoothly.
That which sold me on iFi compared to other brands is the xBass+ and the 3D+. Apparently these audio characteristics are applied in the analogue stage as opposed to digital manipulation. There must be something to it because compared to other brands I’ve owned that digitally apply “bass-boost” and “surround sound”, the iDSD Signature sounds absolutely fantastic. The bass is boosted without any bloat or harshness and not at the expense of the midrange. The 3D+ opens up songs and gives them an airiness and heightened sense of placement without becoming, echoey, thin and underwhelming. Watching movies and tv shows on streaming services with my iPad Pro together with open-back headphones and xBass+/3D+ is a real treat. With a setup like this you don’t need a DAC/amp with “surround sound” or gaming headphones claiming to create surround sound. The iDSD Signature coupled with headphones known for their soundstage (most open-back planars, Sennheiser HD800/S) give you all the immersive, naturally simulated surround sound you could ask for. Not bad considering that the audio from most streaming apps is in stereo only.
How I rate the iDSD Signature:
For volume control I give it five stars. Other reviewers have commented on the initial “unbalanced” sound but as this only happens at lower-than-usable volume, it’s not an issue. It would be like saying Usain Bolt doesn’t crawl fast enough.
Sound quality is fantastic. By contrast, I’ve been using the AudioQuest Dragonfly Cobolt which originally retailed for $330. The iDSD is more that twice as expensive and 20 times the size but what a difference between the two. And what a long way we have come since I purchased the Sony PHA-3 when it was brand-spanking-new on the market - for $1000. So five stars. (As an aside, the Dragonfly Cobolt has its uses and is by no means a bad device. I own it. I use it. But it is, like most AudioQuest devices, overpriced - IMHO.)
Portability - five stars because it is a portable powerhouse but it also depends on your measure of portability. I will not take this device on daily commutes. It’s not that kind of portable. That’s what ANC headphones are for or small devices like a Dragonfly Cobolt. But for travel and being away from home overnight or longer - heck yea it’s portable. iFi also sells a transport case for it if you want to go all-in (but the iFi power plug/adapter is more important).
The iFi iDSD Signature is one of those devices that just do everything and do it well. It’s not enough that I am so satisfied. I feel obliged to sing it’s praises so that you, too, get a good device and that iFi is rewarded for the product they’ve made. In future iterations I would like USB-C to replace USB-A for audio output and for the RCA jacks to be recessed but only if they can do it without necessarily extending the length of the device. These aren’t gripes, just preferences.
I have updated this review in August 2023 to clean it up and add some reflections since my purchase when the product was new on the market. Looking at the current iFi line-up and new products as of August 2023, i would still get this device. It’s great!
