I really enjoy watching Columbo. Should I read the review before or after watching an episode? Actually I've seen so many of them multiple times that I don't get a chance to decide whether to read the episode review or not.
I don't always agree with the author, but that's ok. His opinions are usually kind enough that I don't mind and I sort of feel like I've had conversation with another Columbo fan which will never happen in my house. I'm the only one who wants to watch these, so I needed someone to talk to.

Though each review of every Columbo episode in its ten-year prime is enthusiastically and insightfully written by the Columbophile, he is not afraid of dismantling the lesser ones, and looking at where the producers or writers (or Falk!) occasionally went wrong. This is to the author's credit, and the book becomes even more invaluable to newcomers to this iconic 70's detective franchise. It reads breathlessly, and you are swept up wanting to know why and how the show succeeded or sometimes failed. (Hint: It will not lessen a fan's love of the show in any way, except that maybe he or she wishes there had been another season in the show's original peak run!) So watch each episode, enjoy it...and enjoy it AGAIN when you see what this author loved - or maybe only liked - in it. I foresee a very long tenancy for this terrific guide on my coffee table!

Being both a huge Columbo fan and an admirer of Columbophile's blog, there was no chance in the world I would not buy this book. Naturally expectations were high and I'm very happy to say that The Columbo Companion is exactly what I hoped it would be.
Before reading, as our writer frequently reminds us, this of course is the subjective analysis of one (maybe THE) Columbo fan and expert, so you may not always agree with his conclusions and you may like some episodes more, or less, than he does.
Don't let that bother you, I'd say, but instead let it inspire you to rewatch the episodes you've loved for so long, or not yet so long, and and then read back and see what your Companion has to say about them. That way, reading this book is like discussing Columbo with an ald friend, the one who always managed to say the right thing, usually in a humurous way, making you contemplate what you just watched.
In short, this is the book Columbo fans have been waiting for and personally I sincerely hope there will be a follow up discussing the later episodes as well. Even though I know that my companion and I won't always agree.
